Necessity is the Mother of Invention in the Jewelry Findings Business

Filed under: Business — Tags: leah @ 10:37 am

The holiday season is a busy time of year in the jewelry findings industry. The past few months at Nina Designs were intense as we processed time-sensitive holiday orders, managed inventory levels with volatile silver costs, prepped for our biggest trade show of the year in Tucson, and all of this with less staff than usual thanks to a particularly nasty cold season. Our days were about working as efficiently as possible and focusing only on the essentials that had to get done (like processing orders), not on things that we wanted to get done (like designing new styles). A big exhale could often be heard around 5 pm, in relief and thanks that we’d successfully made it through another day!

One “aha” moment lead to systems changes that will save us 2-3 hours a week of tedious data entry. Scrambling to get orders out the door, we realized that some of the product labeling could be done efficiently during production, another huge time saver.

Under normal staffing circumstances, we would have continued with our standard processes, but when pushed beyond our capacity, we began to question the process and ask “why am I spending 45 minutes on this task when I have so many other things that have to get done? There MUST be a faster way to do this!” Working beyond capacity forced a shift in perspective, opening our minds to different possibilities and allowing an innovative solution to bubble to the surface. The time we saved can now be spent on doing the things we want to do, like sketching new designs!

Jewelry Supply Inventory Management: The Shifting Target (Part 3)

Filed under: Business — Tags: Carly @ 10:02 am

In the jewelry supply business and in the jewelry business in general inventory management is often the very key to success. Inventory management has a variety of challenges and is always fluctuating. As the inventory manager at Nina Designs, I would like to share some of my current approaches to inventory management that may help you or inspire a dialogue of further discussion on the topic. In October, I discussed “New Items and Opening Orders.” In December, I discussed “Reviewing Past Sales and Projecting Into The Future,” now I will discuss “Being Careful of the Outliers.”

If you are regularly reviewing your inventory and sales, you can determine when there is a spike in sales on a normally slow item. I call these items “outliers” and give them additional scrutiny. While this spike is exciting, you don’t want to over order or invest too much of your budget into an item with sales that may crash. It’s worthwhile to take the time to do an inventory report for that item to determine how many customers are purchasing it, who is purchasing it, and how often each customer is purchasing it.

Example of an outlier: Snowflake Mandala

Example of an outlier: Snowflake Mandala

I will usually look at a year’s worth of the past sales. If only a small number of customers are purchasing the outlier and there is one large volume purchase, I may reduce my re-order for that reason, especially if the large purchase is made by a new customer or if this particular customer has never ordered this item before. I cannot depend on that customer re-ordering in the same volume or even re-ordering the outlier ever again. It isn’t a wise financial decision to order a large volume based on one customer’s sales because we may be stuck with that inventory and unable to use those funds to re-order other items that are selling frequently to multiple customers.

Jewelry Copyright Legal Action

Filed under: Business — Tags: , nina @ 9:58 am

Jewelry Copyright infringement is very common. In the face of plagiarism, it is hard to decide when to take expensive legal measures and when to let it slide. If  you do decide to take action, what are your options? I asked Dawn Newton from Fitzgerald, Abbott and Beardsley LLP to walk me through the process:

As a first step, you might have your lawyer issue a Cease and Desist letter alleging copyright infringement and pointing out that copyright infringement can be subject to statutory damages up to $150,000 per infringement. For small infringers, the threat of litigation on this scale can be ample discouragement. Large jewelry designers routinely participate in large scale litigation and unless they immediately perceive liability, they will not necessarily be swayed simply by a cease & desist letter.  In some cases, even if they know that they are in the wrong, they may require a company to sue if it is very small, because they may (often accurately) assess that the likelihood that the claimant actually has the money and energy to sue them is slim.

Copyright law is set up so that it is not easy to lose your rights.  Failing to pursue one infringer will not void or eliminate your rights entirely, but it may result in a valid defense by the infringer you fail to pursue.  Designers who want to protect themselves should take prompt action against non-trivial infringement, if they wish to preserve their rights against the infringing designers.

You should budget a minimum of a couple thousand dollars if you want to hire an attorney to help you send a cease & desist letter.  This is because a good intellectual property attorney will spend some time interviewing their client, looking at the designs, and asking questions about the dates of production and the origins of the design, before crafting a letter.  You should also anticipate involving your attorney in any subsequent negotiation with the infringer.

Stop staring at your silver beads and charms! Tips for Staying Creative

Armed with lots of new Nina Design silver beads and charms, bird charms and trusty scroll like handmade links, I have been ready to start designing jewelry only to find myself lacking the creativity that fueled many of my favorite pieces from last year. Simply staring at my bead supplies did not do the trick. Therefore, I reverted to the tricks that seemed to help me in the past. Here are a few suggestions:

Watch period films for dramatic jewelry and interesting color combinations. See how you can make similar pieces with a contemporary feel. For a current project, I am watching lots of period films that take place in the South like New Orleans, LA.

Go for a walk and take the time to smell the flowers. Be inspired by animals such as birds and squirrels, natural shapes like tree branches, and architectural details along public buildings or old Victorian homes. I go on walks to enjoy the diversity of architectural gems in Oakland, CA.

Listen to music. Its fun to be inspired or imagine you are creating jewelry for a rock star or to attend an Opera. I listen to a lot of classical musical while sketching new designs.

Travel or go Downtown. Maybe you have a friend who lives in a fun city or out in the desert. Another option is to attend a popular restaurant, a local art opening or farmers markets to see how and what people are wearing. Sometimes just browsing at your pictures from past travels will spark ideas and inspiration. I have been referring to the photos of my most recent trip to New Orleans, LA. A beautiful wrought iron porch has spurred a recent creation!

One of my favorite blogs Pikaland posted a wonderful list written by Amy Ng for fueling creativity. I take the sketch book idea very seriously.

Enamel Jewelry

Filed under: Learn Something New — Tags: , , nina @ 10:00 am

Enamel Jewelry offers endless color opportunities. Resin enamel has become a popular way to embellish sterling silver. A few months ago, I visited Rio Grande, where Patti Sowell walked me through the resin enamel process. It requires a good deal of practice and patience but the results are worth it. An overview is currently posted in our Classroom, along with a detailed PDF that you can use to order supplies and print out to keep beside you while you work. Have fun!

New Silver Pendants and Charms

Designing New Silver Pendants and Charms has been front and center this week. New Styles were pushed to the back burner during our busy holiday season, but this week, it was our primary focus. We’re working on a new dog bone charm that is stamp-able, a bicycle charm, a lucky elephant, and most exciting, horses! Horses have been on our to-do list for a few months now, both requested by customers and by our staff.

Straight from a little girl's dream - a beautiful white Arabian horse.

Straight from a little girl's dream - a beautiful white horse.

As with many young girls, I had a love affair with horses. I read books about horses (The Black Stallion series, Misty of Chincoteague, National Velvet, etc.); I watched horses on TV (Olympic Equestrian events); I leased a horse named “Angel” with money I made from my paper route; I read the newspaper classified section “horses for sale” and fantasized about owning my own horse; I drew pictures of horses; and one of my biggest scars is the result of a horse fall.

Imagine my delight this week when it was my job to draw horses! Back when I was a child little did I dream that drawing horses could be part of a career! I’m often amazed at how life comes full circle in many unexpected ways. Thank you, our customers, for your support of Nina Designs. It is our goal to spark your creativity with new, exciting findings so that you can bring beautiful jewelry to life.

Silver Charms: New adventure, inspired designs!

Here at Nina Designs we are always coming out with new silver charms. As an employee and a designer, this is a blessing and a curse. Just when I think maybe I should slow down my purchasing, cut back, appreciate what I have, we come out with the most adorable new charm! This week it was the hot-air balloon charm that got me. It is the latest addition to our travel, or as I like to think of it, adventure series.

Feeling slightly travel deprived, I longed for the old-world nostalgia of exploration, and my Whimsical Adventure Necklace did just the trick. I used our silver compass charm as a link from which to suspend the hot-air balloon, the word tags, dream and explore, along with a small faceted tourmaline bead. Above the pendant compilation hangs a cluster of tourmalines, a chrysoprase nugget, and a small round yellow rutilated quartz. I wanted the cluster to evoke an atmosphere of wide blue skies in which to dream of endless possibilities.

I hope you find our new design ideas as inspiring as I do. I’m sure there will be many more to come in the future! Happy designing!

Silver Jewelry Philanthropy

Filed under: Behind the Scenes, Business — Tags: nina @ 10:04 am

Silver jewelry is our passion at Nina Designs but we are also committed to using our business to help create a better world. We can do this in many ways: by paying fair wages to our artisans, by embracing Green business practices, by spreading beauty and inspiration. Direct philanthropy is an important part of the mix. We would like to thank all of you for making it possible for us to make cash donations to the following non-profits in 2009:

half the sky foundation

Half The Sky Foundation operates infant nurture centers, preschools, foster care and individual educational projects inside government orphanages in China. They have 45 centers operating in 11 provinces. Their early enrichment and educational programs are critical for proper childhood development. Without these programs, babies and toddlers have little or no stimulation. They are often developmentally delayed, which leads them to be labeled as retarded and denied a normal education. Since 1998 35,000 orphaned children have participated in HTS programs.

Heifer International helps children and families around the world receive training and animal gifts that help them become self-reliant.

Recognizing the fundamental human rights of children, they work to give every child security, opportunity, permanency, and a loving family. In Minnesota, throughout the United States and in more than a dozen countries worldwide, they help struggling families stay strong and care for their children. They help children without families find permanent, loving homes through adoption.

WJA, founded in 1983, is the preeminent association of professional women in the jewelry, watch and related businesses.  Through the national organization and a network of 13 regional chapters, members benefit from educational and networking opportunities, scholarships, design competitions and recognition programs.

We hope to do even more in 2010!

Shopping for Silver Beads and Gemstones in Tucson

Filed under: Business, On The Road — Tags: , clara @ 11:05 am

Shopping for silver beads and gemstones in Tucson is an experience like no other and it helps to be prepared.  This will be my 7th trip to Tucson and after years of learning the hard way, I have compiled some tips to make your trip more productive and fun.

  1. I highly recommend you check out my earlier blog post titled Bead Show Survival Guide. Make sure you pay special attention to tips # 1, 3, and 5. Having your documents in order, your feet cozy and your energy levels stable will definitely make your shopping days more pleasant.
  2. Plan for all kinds of weather in Tucson. It is usually chilly, but there often are days with full sun and days that are blustery and rainy. Pack an umbrella, a waterproof tote, and a raincoat.
  3. You will need good shoes. I cannot emphasize this enough. I have ruined at least 3 pairs over the years walking through muddy gravel to get from the parking lots to the main entrance of the shows. If your weatherproof shoes aren’t very comfy, bring an extra pair to change into once you get inside.
