Blog Giveaway: Tips for Jewelry Photography

Win $40 to spend at Nina Designs by offering a jewelry photography tip.

Jewelry Photography can be challenging. There are many things to consider so much so that when I began photographing my jewelry I felt overwhelmed. To gain some control over my runaway emotions, I narrowed my focus to the basics: buy a digital camera with a good macro- setting to get amazing close up shots, shoot in natural light, and use consistent backgrounds to lend my shop a cohesive look.

As Emily points out in Jewelry Display Tips beginning with a clear vision of your customers helps you develop the look of your shop – everything from packaging, display, and photography. My customer appreciates vintage finds, so I chose to use an old metal table in front of a window with great natural light as my background.

In the beginning, my photos were BORING! They were a snooze. I wasn’t sure what to do, so I did the only thing I could. I kept trying. By the time I shot hundreds of photos, I began to tweak my approach to jewelry photography in a way that made all the difference. This sounds counter-intuitive, but the more I thought of my jewelry as sculpture and not as jewelry at all, the more interesting my photos became. Once I freed my mind of the constraints of what jewelry should look like, I was able to position my jewelry into unique perspectives, and format my photos in eye-catching and unusual ways.

Win $40 to spend at Nina Designs! What tips have you learned that you can pass along? Offer your tip for a chance to win $40 to spend on jewelry findings. Earn an extra entry by sending a photo to go along with your tip. Leave your tip here as a blog comment and send photos to juanita(at)ninadesigns.com. My goal is to write a follow-up blog with everyone’s contributions. This way we can have a convenient and useful reference when we need it.

Studio Contest – Vote for your favorite jewelry design studio

Once you catch the jewelry design bug, your life is never quite the same. Your brain is constantly designing, your hands constantly wire wrapping, and what little extra space you have is overrun with beads, jewelry supplies, and tools. Becoming a jewelry designer is a fabulous transformation that I welcomed into my life with open arms. And, from the looks of our 15 photo entries, you have too!

And, boy, do some of our entries got it bad. One creates in her favorite recliner, another out of a duffle bag on the go, a third at her dining room table (taking her meals elsewhere), and another alongside her bunny named Bean. I love it! Thanks so much to all the jewelry designers who shared your spaces. I really enjoyed getting a peek into your very diverse designing lives.

After looking through all the photos, vote on your favorite space by leaving a comment. When casting your vote remember to include the name of the person whose studio you like best. And, to thank you for your vote, we’re entering you into a GIVEAWAY. Two lucky voters will be randomly selected to win either the She’s Sew Crafty Necklace or the Snow Berry Earrings.

Voting ends on Sunday, Feb. 27th and all winners will be announced on Monday, Feb. 28th, 2011. Good luck everyone!

Win $100 Shopping Spree for Jewelry Findings

Filed under: FUN Contests and Giveaways @ 11:24 am

There’s still time for you to get your studio photos in for a chance to win $100 in jewelry findings. We extended the deadline for photos until this Sunday, Feb. 20.

I’d really like to encourage you to share your work space, no matter what state it’s in. Whether your desk is covered in mountainous piles of beads or neat little plastic boxes, doesn’t matter. In fact, I like messy! I’m the messiest maker ever. It’s the only way I can manage to find anything – right where I last left it.

Juanita's Bead Cave

Here’s a snapshot of what my work space looked like this morning. That circled area is the pile of Tucson beads I collected over the last couple of weeks. I will have to do a little organizing to get that integrated into my system. Yes . . . I do have a system. Turns out about every 3 months or so I have to organize my piles.

Contest Guidelines:
1 – Photos should be of your own creative work spaces.
2 – Send no more than 3 photos (JPEG format preferred) to juanita@ninadesigns.com
3 – Please write a short sentence or two about your space & why you love it so.
4 – Deadline to send your photos: Sun, Feb. 20, 2011.
5 – One entry per person for the studio contest.

Don’t be shy. Send your photos out today!

So whether your creative space is a converted closet, a corner of your bedroom, or your garage, we’d love to see them.

If you generously give us a glimpse into your world by sending us photos of your creative workspace, we’ll post them all on a blog to share, and then everyone will vote on their favorite.
