Inspiration = Creativity = Beautiful Silver Charm Designs!

A good playlist and a decent set of speakers are all I need to delve into the world of silver charms and beads. Structurally, music perplexes me. Emotionally, it opens my heart and allows me to feel things I didn’t even know I could feel. Creatively, it inspires me in a way nothing else can.

We’ve all had musical experiences. Imagine yourself driving on a long stretch of highway, listening to a song that just seems to fit. In that moment, everything is perfectly aligned. Your tires are on the road, your hands are on the wheel and music fills your thoughts. As if nothing else matters, it consumes your entire being.

Beautiful Charms, Music and HWY 101 = These Earrings

That same musical experience happens to me nearly every time I sit down to create a new jewelry design. I become one with a spool of silver wire and the music emanating out of the speakers. Music finds it’s way into my designs from the beginning stages of a design. Whether it be sketching or selecting the best silver charms and jewelry findings, I’m sure to be bopping along to my top inspirational tunes.

The notes take life in the evolution of my designs. Lost in a world of great music and beautiful silver components, I become inspired deep from within. It’s an indescribable feeling. And the results are incredible!

A Fresh New Take on Leather Cord

The richness of gold vermeil with leather is an unbeatable combo

Have you been looking for a different method for using our new luscious leather cord? I was trying to find a way to hang silver dangles from the top of our Gold Vermeil Hammered Hoop Earrings without having to glue silver charms in place. After trying a few techniques I decided to tie a tight knot around the top of the hoop earring using the leather cord, and voila! It stayed put!

The fresh green kiwi color and the way the leather cord drapes looks just like a vine swaying from the arbor in my dream garden, so I poked small holes into the leather cord and suspended our cherry blossom silver charms as if they were growing there. I did apply a small amount of Ultimate glue inside the knot before pulling it taught, so I could clip the end of the leather flush to the knot.

I love the organic look of these earrings. In fact, I almost believe if I left them for a few weeks the vines would grow longer and wrap around my other jewelry, climbing upwards. The effect would be magical. I can see myself wearing them as I peruse a street fair in the spring, or to a summer barbecue.

What unusual ways have you incorporated leather cord into your jewelry?

Usher in the New Year with Fabulous Gold-Plated Silver Chain Jewelry

One of my first creations

I combined a delicate gold-plated silver chain with a few small gold plated charms and two chunky black quartz gemstones to create the perfect earring for this year’s New Year’s festivities. I love the simplicity of these earrings. I think I found a great balance between elegance and fun!

One of my favorite parts of getting dressed up is to finish the outfit with the perfect accessories. Before Nina Designs became a part of my life, I had to search near and far to find that perfect accessory. I didn’t have the slightest clue what a wire wrap was – let alone how to do it! In the past few months I’ve learned so much about the art of making jewelry. Now, rather than hunting the stores for the perfect accessory, I envision what I want and make it come to life! Nina Designs has given me the skills, tools and inspiration to dive right into jewelry making. Jewelry is all around me now. I think, breathe and dream jewelry! How could I not? I’m surrounded by an office full of totally creative women as well as a stock-pile of silver charms, chains, clasps, silk, gemstones and more!

It felt wonderful on New Year’s Eve when my girlfriends complemented me on my earrings. My response? “Thanks, I made them!” Thank you Nina Designs!

Making My Christmas Gift with Gold Vermeil Beads, Rubies and Leather

Ruby & Gold Vermeil Cascade Necklace

I made this necklace with gold vermeil beads, rubies, and leather cord for my sister’s Christmas gift. One of the things I love about being a jewelry artist is making jewelry for all the special women in my life. A woman can never have enough jewelry so making a pair of earrings or a necklace can cover a lot of bases – Christmas, birthdays, even a simple thank you. For Christmas my family draws names out of a hat and we give gifts to that one person. My family is very crafty so we have a rule that we must make our gifts by hand or alter them in some sort of creative fashion.

Because they all love unique handmade jewelry, all the women in my family fight over who I get as my person. This year I picked my sister’s name out of the hat and decided to make her something very special. I wanted to make her an eye-catching necklace that’s a bit fancy so she can wear it to holiday parties. She has red hair so the rubies will look great on her. Plus rubies and our gold vermeil jewelry findings compliment each other so well. We recently got in the three tear drop jewelry links in gold vermeil and I love how versatile they are. They make great earrings by themselves, but I thought that they would look nice incorporated in a necklace, cascading from the collar bone. I wanted the rubies to mirror the tear drop jewelry links so I wire wrapped tiny faceted gold vermeil beads to frame and accent their shape.

I had a lot of fun making this necklace and it has given me an idea for some great earrings. Perhaps that will be her next gift. What kind of Christmas gifts are you making this year?

Pandora™ Bead Style Celebration Bracelets

Filed under: Jewelry Design Ideas,New Products — Tags: @ 9:52 am

With the holiday giving season upon us, it seems like everywhere I look, there are ads for Pandora™-style bead bracelets. Television commercials show an excited woman receiving a bead-laden bracelet from her sweetheart; in the US magazines, ads feature bracelets from Pandora™, Troll™ Chamilia™ and newcomer NovoTroll™. I hear from my traveling friends that the trend is VERY hot in Eurpore, especially among the younger hip crowd. Italian Vogue has ads from Tedora™, Piroppo™ and MaVi™ featuring “celebration” beads.

Mixing silver and gold creates a lush look on this Pandora™ Bead style bracelet.

The abundance of “celebration” bead bracelets inspired me to design my own. We recently introduced a new thick leather bracelet with a twist-off end cap that can be stacked with large-hole beads. The leather bracelet is a bit younger and edgier than the chain bracelet. I stacked on my favorite large hole beads, adding silver and gold links between for additional movement and texture. Mixing silver and gold creates such a lush look. How have you embraced the “celebration” beads trend?

Commemorate Milestones with Sterling Silver Charms and Jewelry

Filed under: Jewelry Design Ideas — Tags: , @ 11:13 am

Back to school for little Ella!

One of my favorite things about Sterling Silver charms and jewelry is the way it can be used to commemorate milestones or special events. I love how significant a piece of jewelry can become based on the occasion it is created for, the story it tells, or the important loved one it symbolizes. Sterling silver charms are a great way to create a piece of jewelry that tells the story of the important milestone of starting school and the growth of the child in your life.

It’s back to school time and for many of my friends it means their little ones are graduating to grade school. I love the necklace that Anna created using our hand print sterling silver charm that recalls the hand print art often created by children, mixed with a whimsical combination of the tiny gold wish bone and pale colored gemstones. This would be a lovely necklace for any proud mother. I also love the idea of pairing our sweet apple charm with an initial charm, which could be an adorable start to the alphabet, or a thoughtful gift for a teacher. What special occasions do you create jewelry for?

Ready For Fall Leather Cord Necklace

For this leather cord necklace I was inspired by the new colors we just got in the deer hide lace. The wine and sienna remind me of fall which is quickly approaching. Fall also happens to be my favorite season and color pallet. Although spring is known as the season of new beginnings, I believe fall is as well. A new year of school starts, the sun is changing, trees are turning beautiful colors and the air is crisp. The succession of colors of the leather and the gemstones I used captures this feeling.

One element I love experimenting with in my jewelry is using leather in unexpected ways. It is so versatile in the ways it can be manipulated. Instead of using the tulip crimp clasps, I used jumprings and a gold vermeil three strand clasp. I just poked holes at the tips of the leather and stuck the jumpring through it. This gives each leather cord a defined length and the beads sit in relation to one another. It sits on my neck just as I envisioned it.

What are the different ways you have used the deer hide leather lace?

Bead Nights Feature Silver Findings

Filed under: Jewelry Design Ideas — Tags: @ 8:50 am

Last night we enjoyed a Nina Designs Bead Night, when we all stay after work, experiment with new silver jewelry parts and create together! I look forward to these evenings when we share ideas, inspiration and beading techniques with each other while socializing with fellow employees who are fortunately also friends. This was the perfect time to see if I could make a version of a sinuous leather bracelet design that I’ve admired for several months.

A silver button is the clasp on this deer hide lace bracelet.

After stringing one of our new silver buttons onto our deer hide lace, I tied my yellow thread to the leather and began stringing. Over an hour later, I had a bracelet about a half an inch long! I had a fit of giggles when I compared my progress to the rest of the group. Emily had oxidized her components, and wire wrapped gorgeous pearls to complete a stunning necklace. Marcy had stitched two strands of olive green beads to leather and only needed to add her vintage button clasp. Marisa’s necklace was crimped off and complete, and Carly had a great design going incorporating old keys and our new Gear Charms.

Fortunately, Juanita saved me by recalling a conversation she had at Tucson with one of our customers about exactly how to make this style of bracelet. It turns out the best technique is to use two needles, one on either end of a long piece of thread. The two needles are used to go through the same bead from either end. It also helps to anchor the leather cords so there is tension when they’re pulled forward. After starting over and adjusting my technique, I got into a rhythm (it felt similar to making a snake braid). I finished the bracelet in two hours. Now that I have my technique, I’m looking forward to making additional bracelets with different color combinations and perhaps with silk cord instead of leather.

What new beading skills have you recently acquired? Do you have any time saving tips to share?

Silver Feather Pendant Two Ways

Victorian Feather Necklace

The care and the detail that went into the design of this silver feather pendant is impeccable. The stem of the feather pendant and its textured ribbed detailing is quite lifelike. What’s even better is the little part in the feather’s tip specifically designed so that you, the designer, can choose to use it two ways. You can either dangle it vertically, or horizontally from the hidden pendant bail and the little part in the feather. How ingenious.

I also love the bohemian spirit and symbolism of feathers that revolves around ascension and spiritual evolution to a higher plane. Feathers were worn not only by Native American Chiefs, but also Celtic Druids and Egyptians to symbolize their communication with Spirits, to express their celestial wisdom, and to represent the power of air, wind, & thunder gods. In the necklace I designed with the feather pendant lying horizontally I included little turquoise beads to represent the heavens and the green idocrase briolette to represent earth. I am happy with the look of this necklace and its symbolic meaning.

If you’re not into the bohemian, hippie chick thing, this feather can also take on a Victorian look. And when worn long it becomes quite poetic and writerly. Maybe because it reminds me of a feather quill pen. Whichever way you choose to use this feather, you’ll love it. We’ve had it in stock for two days now, and already we’re getting wonderful critiques from our customers. Peggy Li from Peggy Li Creations wrote: Uh, your new designs are bananas. Love the feathers!

Turning Tassels into Exquisite Sterling Silver Earrings

Filed under: Jewelry Design Ideas — Tags: , @ 11:04 am

I was feeling really inspired by Clara’s blog about tassels as a fashion trend in jewelry and accessories a few weeks ago, so I decided I needed to make a version for myself in the form of Sterling Silver Earrings. I thought a great way of integrating my tassels into a design story would be to use our hand carved wood coral branch pendants dangling beneath a swarm of seaweed-like chain.

After consulting with Clara, our in-house tassel expert, I learned a few pointers for making great chain tassels:
1: Use as much chain as you can get your hands on.
2: A bead or bead cap of some sort is necessary, so your tassel doesn’t end abruptly into your wire wrap.

Once I had these key points in mind, I started gathering pieces of chain (all slightly different lengths) and wire wrapped them together with a small bead cap on top. I was delighted with my results that remind me of an under water seaweed garden. What fashion trends have you adapted to suit your style?
