Silver Charms Give Back at Nina Designs

Now silver charms and jewelry can not only make us look good but they can do good. Aside from our international charitable donations we are also striving to make local changes and do good right here in the Northern California. We recently became green certified which means we make even more Earth friendly decisions in how we run Nina Designs, like using only 100% recycled paper, never using toxic cleaning products, and about half of the Nina Designs staff bikes to work daily.

Recently Nina Designs donated a beautiful silver bracelet to a wonderful local organization: Breathe California! Breathe California’s mission is to fight lung disease in all its forms and works within communities to promote lung health. Breathe California is hosting its 21st annual Clean Air Awards on Friday, April 15, 2011, in the Julia Morgan Ballroom at the Merchants Exchange in San Francisco. It will focus on positive initiatives that are being taken to reduce global warming and air pollution, with a focus on California. You may purchase tickets, or contribute to this cause here. Don’t miss your chance to bid on this beautiful Nina Designs bracelet and contribute to a great cause that effects us all.

In what small way do you practice being “green”?

Celebrate Earth Day by helping to preserve the world’s islands and coral reefs

Our Earth Day Eco-Pledge: Nina Designs will donate $1 to Seacology for every new person who likes us on Facebook by Earth Day, April 22nd. If you’re already a Nina Designs fan, share our Facebook Eco-Pledge with friends and family, then go to our wall and let us know you shared, and we’ll give $1 to Seacology for that effort too! Help spread the word so we can donate as much as possible.

A little bit about Seacology: They are a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the world’s islands and their cultures. Their efforts include 215 conservation projects on 116 islands in 45 countries around the world, protecting over 1.8 million acres of coral reef, rainforest, and other fragile island ecosystems, along with the wildlife they harbor. This includes 50 projects in Indonesia, protecting both marine and terrestrial habitat.

They do great things like building schools and health clinics in exchange for marine reserves, and setting up fresh water systems to villages that need it!

Silver Pendant Sales Aid Guatemalen Women

Silver Pendant sales at Nina Designs allowed us to donate to Namaste Direct, a non-profit organization working to alleviate poverty in rural communities in southern Mexico and Guatemala. They provide women entrepreneurs with micro credit loans  as well as business training to enhance their chances for success. The training focuses on business development and financial literacy. Each woman works with  a personal business adviser for two years. Our contribution of $500 will provide a loan and training for one woman for an entire year. It has been demonstrated that as a woman’s income rises, she typically invests in nutrition, education, housing and health care for her family. We think this is a fabulous investment. Thank you for your purchases of silver pendants and jewelry making supplies. You helped us assist Namaste Direct in their work to alleviate poverty!

Silver Charms Help Bali Orphans

Filed under: philanthropy — Tags: @ 10:59 am

We all love to make jewelry with silver charms but did you know that your last charm purchase helped orphans in Bali? Though you won’t see them when you visit as a tourist, Bali has a community of about 4,000 orphans. In the past, when these children became ill they often went without treatment.  Bali Kids was opened in 2009.  The project provides a clean, safe environment for orphans requiring special care. The center is open to any children registered in Bali’s orphanages who need medical attention. Children from the local village who’s family hold a ‘poor family card’ can also receive free treatment and care.  Bali Kids also operates a mobile medical team that treats 600 children a month. In addition, they teach hygiene, health and diet to orphanage staff and in local schools. Nina Designs made a $1,000 donation to Bali Kids in February 2011. Thank you for helping us help these kids!

Silver Charms support BeadforLife

Filed under: philanthropy — Tags: @ 8:00 am

It is our privilege at Nina Designs to create and sell silver charms and pendants.  During the holidays we try to pause and remember the less fortunate members of our global community who struggle to secure food and shelter. I am always excited when I learn about programs that harness the power of creativity to solve social problems and help women improve their economic prospects.

This holiday season you might find a small pack of handmade paper beads in your Nina Designs shipment. These beads are from a nonprofit organization called BeadforLife. This organization trains women in Uganda to  “.. make gorgeous handcrafted paper beads from recycled paper and turn them into necklaces, bracelets, and earrings.  Because the beaders use recycled, colorful paper, the beads help prevent environmental degradation.  What was trash becomes beauty, money, food, and hope”. Even better, their goal is to help these women become independent of BeadforLife within 18 months. To facilitate this transformation, they provide entrepeneurial training and assist women in launching their own small businesses. They also provide other social services, funded from the net profit of their bead sales.

Last month I was at an event where two friends showed up wearing BeadforLife bracelets. One woman bought hers at a Church bazaar, the other at her Synagogue.  Why not organize a BeadforLife sale in your community? Click here for more information.

WAGES: A Better Living, A Better Life

Our Silver Pendants are fun and inspiring but did you know that your purchase helps  Give Back to the community? I recently attended a fund raising event for WAGES, a non-profit organization that trains Latina women to form collectives and clean houses with green cleaning products. A recent study showed that the household income for women in these collectives often increases by 80%! In addition, their health improves dramatically because they are no longer exposed to the toxic chemical cleaners they are forced to use in many traditional cleaning and janitorial jobs.

I was honored to contribute to WAGES. Even better, while I was at the event, I ran into Mike Hannigan, President of Give Something Back. His company donates 100% of the profits from their office supply business to worthy non-profits! We went online to compare prices and found Give Something Back extremely competitive. (We just ordered 100% recycled printing paper from them for a lower price than we were getting at Office Depot). Now, every time we purchase office supplies we have a chance to Give Back to our community. What an amazing idea!

This holiday season, consider purchasing your office supplies from Give Something Back!

Thanks for All the Wonderful Silver Charm Ideas

We were very happy with the results of our silver charms and food drive for the Thanksgiving Season. We received over 50 suggestions for silver charms that we’ll turn into a $100 donation to the Alameda County Community Food Bank. Some of the silver charm ideas included: baby buggy, deer antlers, envelope, frog, scales of justice, and a postcard. There were many great ideas. And, with time you may see some of them in silver! Thanks so much for your participation. Support your local food banks.

Sterling Silver Charms Give Thanks

Filed under: philanthropy — Tags: @ 9:44 am

Sterling Silver Charms from Nina Designs come in hundreds of shapes but we are always looking for new ideas. We also like to give thanks during this holiday season by making donations to prevent hunger. We thought it would be fun to combine our passion for silver charms with a food drive. Just leave a comment with your idea for a new silver charm and we will donate $1 to the Alameda County Community Food Bank. We’ll donate another $1 if you find Nina Designs on Facebook or Twitter, and leave your silver charm ideas there too! We have had requests for football charms, bear silver charms and kitchen utensil silver charms. What is your silver charm request? Think about it while you cook and feast. We will run this silver charm/food drive through November 28th. Bon Apetit!

An excerpt from Alameda County Community 2010 Hunger Study: “Children make up the largest group of people receiving emergency food in Alameda County. Alarmingly, this study reveals that demand among minors is escalating at a rate disproportional to the population in general. Seniors also remain particularly vulnerable to hunger. For low-income seniors, many of whom are already susceptible to chronic diseases and disabilities, a lack of access to nutritious food often triggers depression”.

Silver charms help support little artists at Half the Sky orphanages

Women who are drawn to jewelry design, who love working with beautiful silver beads and whimsical silver charms, are artists. We imagine and sketch jewelry designs inspired by nature and the things we love. Everyday we create objects of beauty we can’t wait to wear and share with our friends. We are lucky to have found an outlet for our artistic flair and to have that interest recognized, nurtured, and supported by those we love.

Thank you for your support!

This recognition and support of the promise in each and every one of us is exactly what Half the Sky Foundation does for orphaned children in China. Through your support on Facebook, this is why Nina Designs is happy to send Half the Sky a check for $500. Institutionalized children often shut down, feel scared and alone, and, having retreated within themselves, are hard to reach. Through infant nurture, responsive listening, and art exploration these children open up, learn to trust and communicate. No longer shy and reclusive, they become expressive young adults. And, when they show an interest in art that interest is recognized and supported like our families have done for us.

Through generous donations, Half the Sky is able to offer some scholarships for college tuition for kids brought up in their programs: “My name is Luo LiNa and I grew up in the Chengdu Children’s Welfare Institution. As far back as I can remember, I often admired and observed nature around me. Whenever I had spare time, I would take a pen and begin to draw. On July 27th, 2006 I received a letter of admission from Chengdu Technological University. My overwhelming joy quickly changed to fear. Fear that I couldn’t afford tuition and would have to pass on the opportunity I had always dreamed about. Just when I was about to give up on my dream, the institution director told me: “NaNa, Half the Sky will provide you with a scholarship for your tuition!” I was so ecstatic to hear this news that my eyes filled with tears.”

Jewelry Designers Join us in Supporting Half the Sky Foundation

I am a jewelry designer and the lucky mother of two wonderful daughters, both of whom I adopted from China as infants. People often say to me, “Your children are so lucky you adopted them”. The truth is that all of our children are extremely lucky. They could have been born in a country ensnared in poverty or local warfare. They could have been born to families that could not take care of them. Please help me celebrate our collective good fortune and honor all the children of the world by improving young lives one by one.

To show our love for the little ones who need our help, Nina Designs will donate $1 to Half The Sky Foundation for every new person who “likes” our Nina Designs Facebook page by Nov 7th up to $1,000.

Half the Sky enriches and enhances the prospects for orphaned children in China through their infant nurture and preschool programs as well as by offering personalized learning, family care, and medical care. It is the goal of Half the Sky to ensure that every orphaned child has a caring adult in their life and a chance at a bright future. Together we can make a difference!

Your Holiday gifts can also be gifts to Half the Sky with our Have a Heart, Save a Child Necklace.
