Adventures in Judging :: Bead Soup Blog Party Winners

Recently, I was asked to be on the judging committee for Bead Soup Blog Party 7. I have to say, with so many talented jewelry designers using such a beautiful variety of beading techniques and jewelry supplies, it was hard to pick winners. There were over 900 pieces submitted by over 500 hundred participants!

What is the Bead Soup Blog Party and how can you get involved? Every January a new contest kicks off. Start by signing up and filling out the Bead Soup Blog Party form. After all the entries are collected, two lucky bloggers are paired together. The two bloggers will send each other beads and findings from their personal bead stash and the fun begins! The idea is to strengthen the beading community and create beautiful one of a kind jewelry.Visit Bead Soup Blog Party to learn more and see past winners.

The mastermind behind this amazing contest is Lori Anderson. You may remember she was recently a Nina Designs Blog Partner. Lori runs several successful beading blogs, an online shop and is a published author! When Lori asked if I would be interested in judging the 7th Bead Soup Blog Party Contest, I jumped at the chance.

Winner & Editor’s Pick for October’s Haunted House Jewelry Challenge

Congratulations to Christie Kelly, the winner of our Design Challenge for October 2012!  Our blog readers voted her Halloween Bracelet as their favorite.

Christie drew her inspirations from her “love of Halloween, and the way it brings out the child in people.  So quickly we move through our days, and forget the little joys!  I wanted to design a piece that I could wear, and be continually reminded to keep the delight in this season!”.

Our Editor’s Pick for this challenge is Lisa Wangeman’s  “Elegant Rocker” earrings!  They look like a lot of fun to wear.  We especially love the tinkling sound they would make “like old keys and old bones!”

Visit Lisa’s Etsy shop: Lisa Michele Creations where you can shop for jewelry and keepsakes, and get inspired by Lisa’s beautiful jewelry photography.

Submissions for our next Thanksgiving Jewelry Design Challenge are due Thursday November 8th!  Hurry – that’s just 16 days away.  See Design Calendar for details.

Voting ends on Sunday, October 21 at midnight.

Title: Haunted Shades of Gray
I was immediately inspired by the multiple shades of gray in the fascinating old house.. pulled into my piece with the frosted gray glass beads accented by the the burnt orange rounds (could they be pumpkins?) or the perfect harvest moon bead. See the cat looking out the window and the bats flying overhead? Of course the attic is littered with skulls and other scarey artifacts……enjoy.

Title: Halloween Bracelet

Inspiration – I absolutely love Halloween, and the way it brings out the child in people. So quickly we move through our days, and forget the little joys! I wanted to design a piece that I could wear, and be continually reminded to keep the delight in this season!
The silver pieces are all from Nina, and bring the quality and theme I wanted to have as the foundation. The bronze and copper pieces are hand cut and stamped, so they reflect the personal, whimsical feel I was trying to achieve. The colors also seemed fitting for the changing seasons!

Title: Elegant Rocker

INSPIRATION: The cinder blocks holding up the front of the house remind me of the Jolly Roger (tiny skull).

I selected the swirl Bali bead because it reminds me of the movement and feeling of the wind…like the leaves swirling around by the top of the haunted house.  I textured the metal to look worn like the house..The design is in all gray with different hues…providing the same feeling of the house and the sky…

The rope links next to the skull make a jingle sound…like old keys or old bones..:)

Winner & Editor’s Pick for September’s Seven Moons Jewelry Challenge

Night of the Shaman

Congratulations to Andrew Thornton, the winner of our Design Challenge for September 2012!  Our blog readers voted his  “Night of the Shaman” bracelet  their favorite.

Andrew drew his inspirations from “the mystical and ethereal quality of Boulet’s work and wanted to translate that into my interpretation. I used a muted color palette with pops of color, incorporating an eclectic mix of materials. To represent the moons, I used seven white lotus seeds. This “collected look” is the perfect backdrop to showcase the talismans and nature-themed charms from Nina Designs”.

To see other unique designs, visit  Andrew Thornton’s shop.

Our Editor’s Pick for this challenge is Mary Choi’s’ “Seven Silver Moons” necklace!  We love its modern appeal and simplicity.

Seven Silver Moons

Mary was inspired by the “melancholy mood of the painting.  The seven moons inspired me to use moonstones that have flashes of light. I incorporated labradorite beads that flash blue and green to match the color scheme of the painting. Nina Design circles create my version of the seven moons”.

Visit Mary’s Etsy Shop:  Perfect that is dedicated to helping children in poverty through handmade jewelry.

Submissions for our next October Design Challenge: Haunted House are due Thursday October 11th! See Design Calendar for details!
