The randomly selected winner of the $40 Nina Designs jewelry photography giveaway is Lisa Michele, comment #3. Congrats and thanks to everyone who offered jewelry photography tips. Jewelry photography has become a necessary skill for all jewelry designers who sell online. And while it is challenging at first, once you get started you will pick up the skill and have fun. I believe if you can make jewelry, then you can take gorgeous photos of it too.
Start with these simple tips I compiled from the original post on Jewelry Photography. Many helpful tips were offered, so be sure to read the comments. What I summarize below are the recurring tips many readers offered:
1) Use diffused lighting. Most readers recommend taking your photos in natural, indirect light. Remember jewelry has a lot of reflective shiny surfaces that bounces light everywhere. That is why you want to use diffused lighting, which you can also achieve using a light box.
2) Use the macro setting on your camera so you can shoot photos really close to the object.
3) Use basic backgrounds. You don’t want to detract from your jewelry. Some readers did recommend using minimal props.
4) Shoot your jewelry from interesting angles.
Those are the basics and all you need to do to get started. Here are some photos of few of our readers offered as excellent jewelry photography that works. Thanks everyone!

Making jewelry is a wonderful practice that fulfills our need to create and to surround ourselves with beautiful things. There’s nothing quite like that spark of energy we feel when we’re in our zone and the ideas start flowing. No matter when you started making jewelry, no doubt you became better with time and picked up many tips and tricks along the way. Some tricks save us time. Some ease stress on our hands. Once you catch the jewelry design bug, your life is never quite the same. Your brain is constantly designing, your hands constantly wire wrapping, and what little extra space you have is overrun with beads, jewelry supplies, and tools. Becoming a jewelry designer is a fabulous transformation that I welcomed into my life with open arms. And, from the looks of our 15 photo entries, you have too!
And, boy, do some of our entries got it bad. One creates in her favorite recliner, another out of a duffle bag on the go, a third at her dining room table (taking her meals elsewhere), and another alongside her bunny named Bean. I love it! Thanks so much to all the jewelry designers who shared your spaces. I really enjoyed getting a peek into your very diverse designing lives.
After looking through all the photos, vote on your favorite space by leaving a comment. When casting your vote remember to include the name of the person whose studio you like best. And, to thank you for your vote, we’re entering you into a GIVEAWAY. Two lucky voters will be randomly selected to win either the She’s Sew Crafty Necklace or the Snow Berry Earrings.
Voting ends on Sunday, Feb. 27th and all winners will be announced on Monday, Feb. 28th, 2011. Good luck everyone!

Where do you turn jewelry findings into fantastic jewelry designs? I love to imagine all the different jewelry designers out there scouting for the perfect beads and silver charms, then diving into their studio excited to make dreamy jewelry, and not coming up for air for many days! I seriously find nothing more inspiring than getting a peek into other designers’ studios. So whether your creative space is a converted closet, a corner of your bedroom, or your garage, we’d love to see them.
If you generously give us a glimpse into your world by sending us photos of your creative workspace, we’ll post them all on a blog to share, and then everyone will vote on their favorite. The one with the most votes will win a $100 Shopping Spree Nina Designs. Plus, voters will be entered into a drawing with a chance to win prizes too.

Contest Guidelines:
1 – Photos should be of your own creative work spaces.
2 – Send no more than 3 photos (JPEG format preferred) to juanita@ninadesigns.com
3 – Please write a short sentence or two about your space & why you love it so.
4 – Deadline to enter your photos: Sun, Feb. 20, 2011.
5 – One entry per person for the studio contest.
6 – One vote per person for the drawing.
Studio photos will be posted in our blog on Mon. Feb. 21, 2011. Voting will be open for a week, from Feb. 21st through the 28th, and both winners will be announced in our blog on March. 2nd. The studio with the most votes wins a $100 Nina Designs Gift Certificate, so remember to rally all your friends and family to VOTE for your photos. Remind them by voting they could win fabulous prizes too!
