Sterling Silver Pendant Bails Demystified

Filed under: Tips and Techniques — Tags: , , juanita @ 8:30 am

Sterling silver pendant bails offer jewelry designers an elegant way to hang pendants from a silver chain or a necklace. You can find over 40 different gold vermeil and silver pendant bails for sale at Nina Designs. In addition to your traditional pendant bails, we’ve designed a number of pinch pendant bails, tube pendant bails, and removable pendant bails. Traditional pendant bails and tube pendant bails are made to slide over your chain, silk cord, leather cord, or wire wrapped gemstones while you are composing your necklace. Once they are placed where you want it, there it stays.

Removable pendant bails offer maximum versatility. If you have a favorite pendant you like to wear often, this is a good choice for you. On a day you’re wearing your favorite jeans and a t-shirt, you can hang your pendant from chain. That evening on your way to the opera, you can easily remove your pendant from the chain and hang it on black silk ribbon worn as a choker. We offer a good variety of removable pendant bails, some quite fancy & embellished with marcasite, others understated & minimal.

One we get a lot of questions about is the simple s-shaped removable pendant bail pictured below. It causes some confusion and took some explaining for me to get it too. It is designed to use with front-drilled pendants, like front-drilled gemstones and artisan pendants made of resin, clay, glass, or shell. But as you can see from our design, you can use it in many ways. The thing to remember is that it’s made for use with any pendants whose holes or rings are front facing.

For comparison purposes, I’d like to introduce a unique silver charm holder that looks almost like this removable pendant bail. The main difference is that it’s made for use with silver charms whose ring faces to the side. They both offer designers a minimal looks that doesn’t interfere with your overall design, but is effective, simple, and secure. Try them today and see for yourself.

Jewelry Display Tips, Part I

Coming up with the perfect jewelry display can be an overwhelming task. Here are a few tips from my own experience to help you get started:

Begin with a clear vision of your jewelry identity:
Who are your customers? What is their age range? What is their style philosophy? Your jewelry display will probably be quite different if the answer was flashy earrings for 20-something fashionistas rather than customizable necklaces for moms or grandmothers.

Create categories: When I’m planning my jewelry display, I start by taking all my finished jewelry and breaking them up into groups. Displaying your jewelry in categories makes shopping easier for your customer. My categories are usually based on what the pieces were inspired by, but other good categories for jewelry display are colors (so your customer can gravitate to their favorite), style (simple or ornate), or common design elements (are you using Nina Designs’ versatile circle links or a print collection? Try grouping them together).

What makes you unique? I create jewelry that is inspired by biology. I took this unique aspect of my jewelry and began to incorporate Petri dishes and specimen tags in my photography and craft fair displays. Using a scientific element in my jewelry display helps make my vision and inspiration clear to my customers. So what makes your jewelry unique? Do you use Nina Designs’ beautiful Lotus Charms and Pendants to make yoga inspired jewelry? How will you evoke the philosophy of yoga in your jewelry display? Are the iconic symbols of the lotus flower and ohm symbol enough? Try using colors and props that set a scene, like soothing colors and natural materials like bamboo or cork, to capture the attention of your yoga-loving customers.

Stay consistent and true to your jewelry identity:
Remember that when customers are shopping online or at a craft fair, your display should compel them to stop and take a closer look. The more your overall jewelry display conveys your vision and identity (and accurately reflects your jewelry), the easier it is for a shopper to become your customer. After all, your vision and style is what bonds you and your customer.

Extraordinary Hand Woven Filigree Beads and Charms

I appreciate unique experiences of life and nature (like the perfect shooting star) similarly to the way I appreciate the unique features of our filigree collection here at Nina Designs. The detail in this collection is extraordinary. Each piece is woven by hand from strands of silver thinner than a human hair. It takes a light touch to arrange these strands in the proper placement, then heat them to just the right temperature for the solder to take. A moment too short and the bead will not set, a moment too long and the whole arrangement will crumble. This is a remarkable process and each piece is so beautiful.

From tiny sweet treasures to large extraordinary pieces, each has a unique quality because they are all intricately hand crafted. They are light in weight but not too delicate to wear regularly. I really enjoy using the tiny filigree flower dangle for accents on larger pieces or for dainty earrings. The filigree orchid charm is fabulous because just like in nature, each one is slightly different but for the jewelry designer, you can still match them for pairs of earrings. For those who enjoy larger pieces, the large filigree oval bead has visual substance but is very lightweight.

I wanted to share this collection with you because it is often missed due to our how wonderfully attractive our New Styles section is. So please take a short extra moment and visit our Shop Visual Menu to quickly find the filigree collection. I am sure you will find something perfect for your next piece!

Fantasia Collection of Silver Pendants

A healthy imagination requires regular exercise. Mine performs flips and twirls over our new Fantasia collection of silver pendants. In exquisite detail, the joyful faces and playful poses of these cherubs exude a carefree and delightful spirit. I can imagine myself as this lively mermaid on the back of my trusty seahorse, frolicking in the waves with my long hair streaming behind. Who needs to worry about rising silver prices when I can just escape to my personal fantasy world, full of fat cherubs and beguiling mermaids?

Inspired by vintage pieces, the quality of these new Fantasia silver pendants is amazing. They are worthy of being passed from mother to daughter as treasured heirlooms. We hope they will spark your imagination like they have ours. We expect to have stock on them in the next six to eight weeks.

Silver Pendants with Pure Lotus Print

We just introduced our most recent new Print pattern, the Pure Lotus. I’ve always been a fan of the lotus flower. It looks wonderful in every stage of development, from the bud, to the flower, and finally the elegant seed pod. In many cultures it symbolizes spiritual awaking. The idea that something so beautiful rises from a murky, muddy lake bottom inspires me. We have been working on this lotus print for months. It was challenging to arrange the leaf, flower, bud and pod in such a way that it would fit on our small silver pendants.

Often we’ll come up with a great potential print pattern, but when we go to put it onto the silver pendants, the pattern doesn’t translate to the small dimensions of the pendants – the flowers are cut off, the elegant curving stem doesn’t fit, or the details are lost. For the Pure Lotus pattern, I started with the outlines of the different size silver pendants and then drew the pattern to fit within the outlines. This is a method I’ll definitely use in the future!

We’re introducing the Pure Lotus silver pendants in three sizes, and if they’re popular, we’ll expand into other sizes of silver pendants. How do you like this new pattern? Are there other flowers that inspire you?

Copy Cat Jewelry Designers

Has someone copied your best design and left you steaming mad? Copy Cats are a perennial problem in the jewelry world, where copyright violations are rampant. We hear about it all the time at Nina Designs and we experience it too.  I once received a catalog from India that consisted entirely of pages xeroxed from my own catalog! While we copyright all of our sterling silver designs, there is nothing I could do about an Indian Copy Cat with no physical presence in the U.S. The sad truth is that while litigation, or the threat of litigation, can be useful in certain extremely blatant situations, jewelry copyrights are notoriously difficult to enforce. Our response? We try to have so many designs in our pipeline that no one else can keep up with us!

Sometimes our competitors make exact copies of our designs.  Other times, the connection is less direct but just as striking. Chanel recently came out with earrings almost identical to our gold plated silver Deco Rose pendant and Tiffany just launched a whole collection of silver keys.

While frustrating, copycats are just a fact of life in fashion. They can even help drive up demand for your designs. We are fully expecting our silver keys and Deco Rose to get even more popular now that the Big Guns have put their marketing muscle behind those looks. Likewise, we tried for years to get traction with our gorgeous Black Satin collection, but it wasn’t until jewelers started pushing the look in the Sundance catalog and other trendy venues that sales took off.

It also helps to remember that we all get inspiration from perusing the magazines and checking out jewelry where ever we see it. I know I should look people in the face first, but my eyes go straight to their jewelry! None of this takes the sting out of seeing your designs copied, but since there isn’t much you can do about it, why not look on the bright side? Remember, “Imitation is the highest form of flattery.”
