Giving Season Extended until Dec 15!

We recently celebrated “Giving Tuesday” at Nina Designs by offering to match contributions by You, our wonderful customers, to the following organizations: The Alameda Food Bank, Futures Without Violence, Human Rights Watch, and The Sierra Club. Your response of support was immediate, generous and greatly appreciated! So, we decided to keep that “Spirit of Giving” going just a little bit longer. We will be accepting donations to any of those four organizations listed on our website (see links below) and we will match your contributions dollar for dollar until Thursday December 15!

Giving Tuesday P1

Now more than ever, we feel it is important to support organizations that are making a positive impact on the world. And your heartfelt support so far has been inspiring. If you haven’t had a chance to “share the love” yet, simply add however many units you would like to your shopping cart (each unit is $1). It’s that simple!

Here at Nina Designs we love our four legged friends! They bring us so much joy, comfort us in hard times, and make us laugh! Lots of our staff members have either rescued animals themselves or adopted them from a shelter! Here are some of our staff members and their adorable furry pals!

Rebecca Pet New

Rebecca, Customer Service Rep

This is Hazel, being friendly and snugly is her game. She’s 13 years old, and I’ve had her since she was 2 months old. My best friend’s dad found her mom stuck on the median of the freeway. He rescued her. When he got her home he found out she was pregnant. I had her and her sister, Anabelle, for 12 years. Unfortunately Anabelle passed away last year. She loves to love and has absolutely the loudest purr I’ve ever heard. She makes friends with everyone she meets including deer, skunks, & dogs. Strangely she loves everyone except other cats. She adored her sister, but every other cat is a sworn enemy.

Since the day she came home to me everyone could tell she was special. She was the smartest and friendliest of her litter. She’s my baby!

Marcy Pet

Marcy, Associate Designer

This is Ban-Ki Moon (named after Secretary-General of the UN). Ban ki was a rescued feral kitten,  saved from being eaten by a Pitbull. He is 11 months old now. The silliest thing he does is stash his toys in our bed, in the couch cushions and in the water bowl. The most annoying thing he does is play with my jewelry when I’m trying to sleep and he stashes away just one earring! He is cute, friendly & playful. He always makes me smile, even when he’s being naughty! Ban Ki has recently discovered the joy of tissue paper. He loves to burrow under it and leap out of it.

Rose Pet

Rose, Customer Service Rep

My kitties names are Trouble (the orange male) & Moxie (the black female). I’ve had them for about four months! They are seven months old, and I adopted them from the Milo Foundation.

Trouble & Moxie both sleep on their backs with their limbs all over the place and it’s hilarious, especially since the longer they’re asleep the more tangled up they get. They are both very sweet (when they aren’t destroying things or running full-speed across the house). If you pick Moxie up she will lick your nose and make a little purr chirp noise. And Trouble plays fetch! I didn’t teach him how, and he’s already better at it than my childhood dog… who I tried to teach him to fetch for 12 years! They are both inside cats, but because they are so interested in the outdoors, my boyfriend and I put them on leashes and harnesses and take them in the backyard to explore. I’m trying to teach them to walk on their leashes, but at this point they’re mostly interested in eating grass and stalking bugs.

Signe Pet

Signe, Marketing Manager

This is Daisy! She is 14 years old and has been with us since she was a puppy. Daisy came from Animal Control. She was deemed un-adoptable because she is half Pitbull and showed signs of aggression. We rescued her from being put down and did extensive training with her for 2 years to make sure she would be a good canine citizen. I’m so glad we rescued her. She has been an amazing family member. My life is better with her in it.

Daisy’s silliest behavior is a trick that she does called “Surprise!” When one of us is sitting down, with one leg crossed over the other, she pops her head through the space created between the bend of the knee on the crossed leg and the leg below it. It always makes us laugh when she does it. Her most annoying behavior is that she will sometimes do it to guests when they visit – which is a little embarrassing….but usually it gets a laugh too, if the person likes dogs!

What kind of pet do you have?

Cat or Dog?

Fish or Fowl?

Pot Bellied Pig or Python?

Tell us a little about your pet! We love to hear cute and silly pet stories!

Holiday Gift Ideas : Support our Micro Loan Recipients

It’s an amazing thing to be able to give back to the artistic community; each time our loyal customers place an order we are able to provide more and more Micro Loans to artisans all over the world. Designing and producing jewelry charms, pendants and findings is rewarding because we are able to help inspire other jewelry designers. To have the opportunity to work with Kiva and Novica to lend money to artisans in order to expand their business is incredible, because we get to see the way these loans are put to use.

Margarita and Martha are a Peruvian mother-daughter team that create incredible holiday ornaments and decorations. Their designs are bright, colorful all while keeping with their cultural traditions and using local materials. Their handicrafts would be a great holiday gift for yourself or a loved one. Take a look at their Novica shop and explore their beautiful work!

“Everything we make uses Peruvian materials that few people take advantage of. We think they are just wonderful,” the women say. “We’d like the whole world to visit Peru, and, of course, to enjoy our favorite handicrafts.” The mother-daughter team provides job opportunities for other women who can also stay at home and take care of their children.

Patrizia creates beautiful bags, scarves and bracelets out of recycled materials. Her designs are not only affordable but extremely environmentally conscious! Take a look at her Novica Shop and explore her fun and functional pieces.

Artist Wahyu practices an Indonesian art form known as batik to produce her stunning bags and purses. As Wikipedia defines, batik is “a technique of manual wax-resist dyeing applied to whole cloth, or cloth made using this technique. The applied wax resists dyes and therefore allows the artisan to color selectively by soaking the cloth in one color, removing the wax with boiling water, and repeating if multiple colors are desired.”

The result is an incredibly stunning fabric that Wahyu then sews and hand beads into purses and bags. These bags are vibrant, versatile and the perfect addition to anyone’s wardrobe. Please take time to look through Wahyu’s Novica Shop and pick up a one of a kind bag.

“I hope that by joining Novica I can improve our family’s quality life and provide my daughter with a better education.” -Wahyu

Every Order You Place Helps a Woman Artisan!

Every time you place a jewelry order with Nina Designs, we are able to make contributions to artists around the world through our Micro Loans program. Nina Designs is proud to be teamed up with Novica to bring awareness and funding to talented women artisans on every continent. Without the support of our loyal customers, our participation in this program would not be possible!

Yuni Kristina, located in Bali, is a Batik artist, producing beautiful and intricate silk shawls and scarves with colorful patterns and designs. Her mother, who was also a Batik fabric artist, has been her biggest inspiration and still creates detailed designs. Yuni and her mother spend time designing and creating together, and Yuni “would like the batik of Bali to become well known around the world, since its beauty is outstanding.” Visit her Novica Shop to purchase a beautiful shawl and support her small business!

Sasithon Saisuk, who goes by the nickname Eaw, studied dance and music in Thailand, and then began working for the school she attended. She performed northern Thai regional dance and in addition, learned to make jewelry. “Silver work is a regional tradition. I design the patterns for this kind of jewelry and adjust it to suit both local and contemporary clothing styles. I recently began experimenting with new materials, and I especially enjoy working with coconuts. First I used them to make jewelry, but then I started to explore crafting other items, such as belts, handbags, etc.”. Visit her Novica Shop to purchase pretty and unique jewelry and accessories, while helping to support a good cause!

Nina Designs’ 2014 Philanthropic Cause :: Centre for Street Children

Jewelry supplies are our main focus at Nina Designs. We design, sell and use them everyday. But there is more to our business than silver charms, pendants, clasps, beads and leather for jewelry. Nina Designs has a strong commitment to making a positive impact on the world through philanthropic work and charitable donations.

Every order our customers place for jewelry supplies helps fund ongoing philanthropy work.  Nina Designs makes donations to many reputable charities around the world, and as a new year rolls around, we have taken our focus to a new cause for 2014.

In Southern Bali, many children are often found on the streets, begging for money, or selling things like bracelets to tourists, bringing back any money they receive to their families. These street children don’t run a great chance at getting an education, and can sometimes even end up in more dangerous situations to get money they and their families desperately need.

A slum school for Street Children in Denpasar, Indonesia, was constructed by the Safe Childhoods Group to provide a safe and clean environment, where children can learn and play, rather than beg on the street. They believe in the power of education, and aims to break the vicious cycle of poverty occurring in their community. Providing education to the children who live and work here reduces the likeliness of them from also entering the sex industry.

center for street children

The Safe Childhoods Foundation is a Non-Governmental Organization combating Crimes Against Children. Safe Childhoods has developed a range of projects, like the slum school for street children, designed to protect and support some of the most vulnerable, traumatized and at-risk children.

For every order you place in 2014, we will be donating money to the Safe Childhoods Foundation to help them proceed with their new project in expanding the school. The new facility will accommodate the existing children at a new premise and will provide the new school with a health and medical center, play center, work-shops for the mothers and fathers of the children in the slums and additional classes on hygiene, rights and life-skills. Our goal by the end of the year is to donate $5,000 to the cause! We strongly believe in their cause and mission, and hope you do too. Take some time to explore their slum school project, as well as others through their website. Help us help these children who can be given a chance at earning an education and escaping dangerous and unhealthy work throughout 2014 by placing orders for your favorite jewelry supplies. It’s our customers who play the largest role in us being able making a difference!
