The weather is heating up, and so are our silver charms

Ursula Earrings

Summer in Berkeley, CA, has finally arrived, and our warm-weather sterling silver charms are flying off the shelves. I have been pulling orders filled with ocean charms, mermaid charms, and flip-flop charms, and it has been making me itch for some summery jewelry of my own.

In anticipation of evening outdoor parties, I wanted to design fun, flirty earrings, but keep them edgy. I chose our gold vermeil starfish bead for the focal point, then picked a couple dainty pearls and paired them with our funky 3 circle link from our black silver collection. I love the contrasting elements in these earrings. They make me feel both girly and tough.

As a new jewelry designer, I am interested in how “seasoned” designers decide what direction to take a new jewelry line, and how far ahead the planning and purchasing happens. Do you plan an entire summer line while you’re shut in over the winter, or do you wait to see what styles are hot as spring trees begin to bud? What new pieces are you excited to use in your next collection?

Modifying Our Jewelry Findings Based on Customer Feedback

The difference between the silver charms and jewelry findings we offer and those you find at the large one-stop online bead stores is that we design the vast majority of ours in house. This means we sketch jewelry findings into life. Based on our sketches, silversmiths make samples for our approval. The samples may or may not work, and most will go through several revisions. This entire process can take several months to complete, and means we offer you only our best.

Designing in-house also gives us the flexibility to continually improve our products based on your feedback. For example, the chubby teardrop links you see here have always been great sellers, which is why when we started hearing some criticisms we responded quickly. Several customers began requesting a little loop be added to the top so they stay in place. Others prefer the jewelry link without the loop, so now we offer both versions. Making these small tweaks is something we are happy to do for you, our valued customers. In fact, we love receiving this type of feedback because we strive to offer the best and to constantly improve our products.

Please feel free to leave requests for new jewelry findings and for modifications to existing designs in our Suggestion Box. You also have the power to review each and every product we offer online. Just find the item online and click the link under the text “In Your Own Words.”

We encourage you to blog as well. Reach out to your customers. It’s a wonderful way to promote your designs and gain interest in your company. And, it’s free. I know that whenever I purchase jewelry made of wonderful silver charms and hand-crafted chain, I like to be informed about the story behind the piece. Who made it? What was the inspiration behind the design? What is the company’s business motto? What’s their take on the silver market? I like to know who and what I’m supporting. I like to know where my jewelry comes from.

A blog can be very personal, but it can also build stronger business relationships. Whatever your approach may be, a well-rounded and insightful blog is bound to make your designs that much more special.

Give a new perspective on your silver charms through blogging. We live in a digital world. Embrace it.

What to do about Jewelry Design BLOCK?

All jewelry designers experience “designers’ block,” but recently I learned it’s when you stop looking for inspiration that you find it. A little while ago I was under some pressure to make jewelry. I struggled in my studio for a night . . . or two. Then the weekend came, and instead of making jewelry, I decided to make it a movie marathon weekend.

Well, you can guess what comes next . . . me in my comfy sweatsedo on my couch with my puppy, bags of chocolate, and bowls of popcorn nearby. I watched countless movies and shows that blur together now. By Sunday evening I was bleary-eyed and a little panicky. My jewelry party was just a couple days away. That’s when I got off my you-know-what, and marched back to my studio to make jewelry.

After making my “go-to” jewelry designs to get my juices flowing, my design inspiration hit. As if commanded, I designed necklaces inspired by Rango and Secretariat, my two favorite movies from my marathon weekend! Sounds cheesy, I know. But I loved them both. Secretariat because I was moved by the idea of being born into this world to do one thing and to do it with all your might. And Rango . . . well, all the lawless characters of the town of Dirt were heartwarming and unforgettable – rattlesnake, lizards, armadillos, and buzzards included. The animation and story of finding your own path were both artfully done.

The next day at Nina Designs I picked up the western-themed charms I needed – a silver cowboy boot, rattlesnake charms, and a couple of horse charms – and got to work. This is what I came up with. They were the first to get plucked up at my jewelry party!

Silver Charms Introduce the Dark and Edgy Side of Nina Designs

The darker side of Nina Designs is slowly expanding with a growing collection of silver charms in edgier designs. With our current selection of silver charms modeled after snakes and skulls it’s easy to be tempted to explore the dark side of your jewelry style. I’ve been especially excited about our new silver bighorn sheep skull, with it’s elegantly macabre attitude that would mix perfectly with chunky chain or leather cord. The sterling silver beetle charm, with it’s precisely detailed legs, has been crawling around my imagination with labradorite, smoky quartz and even grey pearls for fierce earrings and necklaces.

Leah recently shared some sketches for new sterling silver charms that got a lot of excitement in the office, so I thought I’d share them with you. The skull & cross bone charm and beautiful animal skull charm shown below will make their appearance sometime in the next few months. While some new designs make their way to our office quickly, others have a longer, more tortured path full of revisions. These silver charms fit perfectly with my jewelry aesthetic, so I hope they arrive soon! Do you enjoy of the darker side of jewelry making? What do you think of the upcoming designs?

Stamping on Silver Charms and Spangles

We often receive questions about which sterling silver charms and spangles are best for stamping. We strongly recommend using our thicker sterling silver charms because the thickness of the metal absorbs the impression of each stamp for a nice clean finish. However, we also offer thinner silver spangle charms that can be used for stamping as well.

When stamping on our the thinner spangle charms, the results will be a bit more rustic and handmade looking, as shown below. Because they are thinner they became a bit warped after being stamped, but you can flatten them out again. The stamped designs also showed through on the back of the disk. And, the silver became a bit depressed around the letters, making them a bit more indistinct.

While we recommend using our thicker silver charms for stamping, you can achieve a rather charming and rustic finish by using our sterling silver spangles. To learn how to stamp on your sterling silver charms, read more in our classroom.

How Core Values Support the Making of Silver Charms

Here at Nina Designs it is a priority not only to offer you inspiring silver charms and excellent customer service, but also to support each other as a team and challenge ourselves personally. While we’ve been doing this for 25+ years, we’ve recently decided to draft a set of meaningful core values that will guide each of us through our everyday decisions. Nina’s been reading many books on this process, and we started a book club so we could all help. Here are some of our initial thoughts.

After reading our first book, “Delivering Happiness,” by Tony Hsieh, we were most impressed by Zappos’ deceptively simple yet very meaningful list of core values that express their unique work culture and traits they would hire and fire by. Anyone who knows Zappos would recognize them by reading this list. During our book club meeting we immediately recognized that Nina Designs is similar to Zappos in one very fundamental way – we are both mail order companies. But while Zappos delivers happiness through speedy shipping and incredible customer service, we deliver inspiration through unique designs and support for women artisans and entrepreneurs.

It’s been 8 weeks since that initial meeting, and after much deliberation, we’ve drafted our core values. Here they are:

Brainstorming Session

Creativity
Creativity drives our designs, our problem solving and our approach to life.

Excellence
We design and sell excellent products. We deliver outstanding customer service.

Respect
We respect each other, our customers, our suppliers, our community and our environment. We treat others as we wish to be treated ourselves.

Teamwork
We are an upbeat team with a family spirit. We build authentic, supportive relationships through honest communication.

Initiative
We are self-motivated and responsible. We take the initiative to improve our personal performance, our products, our company and our community.

Inspiration
We deliver inspiration through our unique designs, our support for women artisans and entrepreneurs, and our progressive business model.

What do you think? Would you recognize us by this list?

Details are the magical key to unlocking the power of silver charms!

The microscopic details of our silver charms and jewelry design have altered my creative focus in a big way. Previously, my creative energy was focused on projects like refinishing furniture or choosing the perfect color palette for an entire house . . . projects about the big picture. Small and detailed was not necessarily my area of expertise. But alas, all of the fantastic silver charms and findings at Nina Designs have been successful in opening (or shall I say narrowing) my eyes to a new set of parameters.

All of us share a common interest in jewelry and are well aware that in the world of silver charms and chain, details are key. What gauge silver wire is appropriate with my favorite silver charms? Should I use 4 mm or 5 mm jump rings? How many inches of that beautiful gold-plated chain is enough? How much is too much? Making jewelry requires a set of very critical eyes. And a strong magnifying glass too! You’ve got to be aware down to the millimeter. When it comes to jewelry, it really is the small things that matter most.

What details do you pay most attention to in your designs? Any handy tips you’d like to share?

A Head First Jump into the World of Jewelry Findings at Nina Designs

Filed under: Behind the Scenes — Tags: @ 12:58 pm

Whether you’re experienced with jewelry findings or just stepping into the world of jewelry design like myself, the sense of exploration is thrilling. I am new to the Nina Designs team and excited to be here. Having the opportunity to work with many strong, intelligent, and creative women has been something I’ve always wanted. My experience with jewelry design is humble, having only taken a basic jewelry class in art school. Working with beads, leather cord, silver chain, clay and silver scraps to create simple pieces is as far as my jewelry design experience goes. I know my background in photography, ceramics and textiles will help mold and shape my developing jewelry designs. Every order I pull I find a new favorite Nina Designs piece to incorporate into new creations. No matter where I am in life, I am always motivated to flex my creativity in new ways. I know my supportive and creative coworkers will teach me all the tricks of the trade as I venture into a new realm.

What creative medium have you just discovered or always wanted to learn more about?
