The arrival of our new large hole pearls last week marked an exciting day at Nina Designs. These pearls are gorgeous: nice and chunky at between 9-10 mm, with a beautiful luster and organic potato shape. Best of all are their extra large holes! At 2.5 mm, these holes can accommodate our silk cord, our deer hide lace, and our thin chain by the foot.
We couldn’t wait to start playing: below is a bracelet made with knotted pink silk cord, white large hole pearls, and our new silver hammer finish button. We also strung the pearls on the deer hide lace for a fantastic contrast between tough leather and refined pearls – simply wrap around the wrist and tie for a very cool look. One large holed peacock pearl sliding on a delicate gold plated chain at the base of the neck is stunning. Can you tell how excited we are? What are some other ways large hole pearls might be used?

Ok, this is a perfect time for me to ask a question on a “how to” that I can’t seem to figure out! How do you make an adjustable strap for a bracelet with your deer hide or silk? Will it work? Help!!!

Hi Jennifer – in this example, I am using the button as the clasp and my silk is doubled. I started by stringing the button on, and then making a knot. I then started adding pearls to my double thread, with a knot tied after each pearl. Once I’d added about 7″ worth of pearls, I tied a knot after the last pearl. The next knot I tied was placed so that there was open silk for the button to fit through. I started with this knot tied loosely. Using the button, I tested the knot placement and adjusted it forwards or backwards along the silk so that the button squeezed tightly through the opening. Once I was satisfied with the knot placement, I pulled the knot tight. I repeated this step again so that the bracelet length can be adjusted by sliding the button through the first or second opening. Hope that helps!
If using a single strand of silk or leather, the easiest and least expensive way to make a bracelet adjustable is to just tie the ends together in a square knot!

Hi Leah
Can you thread the pearls onto 3mm deer hide lace?

Hi Lindy,
With a little coaxing I’m fairly certain you can string our large hole pearls onto 3 mm deer hide lace. It’s pretty easy to slide onto 2 mm, so I’m thinking 3 mm is possible.
